New Skills in Demand Visa Changes – December 2024

From December 2024, the Australian government is introducing a new Skills in Demand (SID) visa to address labor shortages and attract skilled workers. It replaces the old Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa and comes with three main streams:

  1. Specialist Skills Stream: For high-income earners (earning over $135,000 per year) in non-trade jobs.
  2. Core Skills Stream: For workers in critical jobs listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), with a minimum salary of $73,150.
  3. Labour Agreement Stream: For industries with specific needs through agreements with the government.

Key Changes

  • Less Work Experience: Applicants only need 1 year of relevant work in the last 5 years (previously 2 years).
  • Easier Path to Permanent Residency: Workers can transition to permanent residency via the Subclass 186 visa.
  • Job Flexibility: Visa holders can switch employers more easily.

Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)

The CSOL replaces old occupation lists with 456 critical jobs, covering industries like healthcare, construction, education, and technology.

Why It Matters

  • Employers get faster access to skilled workers.
  • Workers get a simpler, clearer pathway to work and live in Australia.

This new visa system aims to simplify processes, fill job gaps, and boost Australia’s economy.
