5 red flags in relation to management of international students

We have compiled a list of the most typical problems encountered when dealing with foreign students. Registered Education Providers (REP) can save themselves a lot of trouble if they pay attention to the following list:

  1. Non-Compliance with Student Visa Conditions:
If an education provider fails to monitor and ensure that their international students comply with their visa conditions (like attendance and course progress requirements), this can be a significant red flag. It suggests the provider may not be adequately supporting or managing student compliance according to the National Code.

  • Inadequate Support Services:

Lack of proper support services for international students, such as counseling, legal advice, or academic support, could indicate non-compliance with the National Code’s requirements to assist students in adjusting to study and life in a new country.

  1. Poor Record Keeping:
Failure to maintain accurate and up-to-date records for international students, including enrollment details, attendance, and academic performance, can be a red flag. This is essential not only for internal management but also for compliance with governmental regulations.

  1. Insufficient Orientation Programs:
Orientation programs are crucial for helping international students understand their rights, responsibilities, and how to access support services. A lack of such programs, or poorly conducted orientations, could signal non-compliance with the National Code, which mandates that REPs provide this support.

  1. Inadequate Marketing Practices:
If an education provider is found to be misleading or providing false information in their marketing materials, it can be a red flag. The National Code typically requires that all information provided to prospective students is accurate and not misleading, ensuring they have realistic expectations about their courses and living conditions.

Monitoring these aspects can help in identifying institutions that might not be meeting the required standards, thus protecting the quality of education and welfare of international students.
